Jennifer Acevedo ’2019

Class of 2019, Major: Business with concentration in Leadership, Minor: Psychology

My experience of evaluating the financial and socio-economic impact of the beneficiary families has given me a real understanding of the practical applications of health policy on communities as well as its impact on the economy of Vietnam.

“As a Statistics and Data Analysis intern at VinaCapital Foundation (VCF) at Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam, I had the opportunity to conduct research on the impact of grassroots humanitarian medical work at the local and national economic levels. More specifically, I assessed the impact of children’s corrective heart surgeries on families and the larger community. This research focused on rural Vietnam, an area that struggles with high poverty rates and poor health care systems. My work helped to highlight the economic benefits of international non-governmental organizations medical programs on families and communities. The data collected from this research looked at the socio-economic and financial variables of VCF’s beneficiary families for 113 families out of the 240 families contacted. This study found most families indeed saw improvements in their finances after surgery, a finding I investigated with advanced data analysis techniques on Microsoft Excel. On the whole, this experience increased my confidence in communicating my research to those outside my field and improved my intercultural skills. My experience of evaluating the financial and socio-economic impact of the beneficiary families has given me a real understanding of the practical applications of health policy on communities as well as its impact on the economy of Vietnam.”
