The best thing I ever did in my academic career was declaring a major in Philosophy. I am proof that the skills you learn in your Philosophy major will be vital and transferable to all industries. Majoring in Philosophy provided me the confidence to ask fundamental questions and encouraged me to dig deeper into human thinking. Following my studies at MMC, I began my Master’s in Media Management at The New School and furthered my work experience in all types of industries (legal, music, non-profit). I remember interviewing for my current position at a tech company and the co-founder asked me about my Philosophy degree. Discussing my critical thinking skills and showcasing my curiosity for the human condition and its relationship to the digital world made me stand out from other candidates. The PHIL/RS department prepared me to look at all sides, develop effective strategy through argumentation, and engage with important issues.

IDS allowed me to explore interests and passions through independent studies, internships, and coursework that both challenged me and led me to building the curriculum I was proud to graduate with. Through my Interdisciplinary Studies curriculum at MMC, I was able to cultivate knowledge and experience in both my areas of personal and professional interest, including social and digital media, advocacy, and intersectionality among marginalized communities. Exploring the areas of Gender and Sexuality Studies has greatly contributed to my position as a Communications Associate in the LGBTQ+ nonprofit world by exposing me to different perspectives, identities, and societal issues that I come across in my job every day.

Through the connections fostered by the MMC and the variety of skill sets I learned within the Arts Management minor, I graduated ready to join the industry and make change. After graduation, I began working as a part-time contractor in development and fundraising for Musical Theatre Factory (MTF). Most recently, I have joined the team of CJAM Consulting LLC, a New York-based firm committed to arts, cultural and social justice institutions that foreground communities of color, honor legacy and contribute to economic vitality. Having the knowledge of all of the elements that go into producing theatre, as well as the elements that shape the very industry itself, has empowered me to create my own work and opportunities as a young Indigenous/Latina director. The connections and networking opportunities from my career in Arts Management have opened doors to advancing my directing career while paying me a living wage.

Being a psychology major and neuroscience minor at MMC prepared me for my graduate studies (Mental Health Counseling). Having previous knowledge on Epigenetics among other important topics from my neuroscience courses has helped me be a step ahead in most of my graduate courses today. My Psych and Neuroscience courses provided me with indispensable skills that taught me how to read and comprehend journal articles in addition to a full year learning how to use SPSS for statistical analysis. I’m a step ahead in my program because of the challenging psych and neuroscience courses I enrolled in at MMC.

A few 📸 from yesterday’s Orientation Musical, directed and choreographed by Theatre Arts Professor Emily Clark and starring some of our super-talented Theatre students, who very generously gave their time and energy to rehearse and perform. The show, co-written by Clark and her students over the years, explored common fears among first years. Amazing job, everyone. We loved it! #nycstudents #nyccolleges ##theatrestudents

That's Isabella Paragas ’27, a double major in Musical Theatre and Business, and thee Jason Gotay ’11! Besides MMC, they share something in common: @sacmusicals, California's largest nonprofit arts organization. Jason starred in its recent production of "Sunset Boulevard," and Isabella's been working as an education and community engagement assistant for the organization this summer. Among other things, her team helps make theatre more accessible for blind and visually impaired fans, children, and underrepresented groups. We're doubly proud! 💙 #theatre #theatrearts #nyccolleges #theatrestudents
