EWL Students Visit Poe Cottage

Laura Hydak’s EWL 125 class, The Literary Imagination, recently visited the Edgar Allan Poe Cottage in the Bronx as part of the course’s second unit, Poetry.

After reading and analyzing one of Edgar Allan Poe’s most famous works, The Raven, Professor Hydak brought her students to the celebrated writer’s home, located in Kingsbridge, Bronx.

According to the Bronx County Historical Society, “a small wooden farmhouse built about 1812, the cottage once commanded unobstructed vistas over the rolling Bronx hills to the shores of Long Island. It was a bucolic setting in which the great writer penned many of his most enduring poetical works, including “Annabel Lee,” “The Bells” and “Eureka.”

The cottage was restored to its original appearance and a guided tour brings visitors to the poet’s rocking chair as well as the bed in which Poe’s late wife, Virginia, died.

Tours cost $5 and $3 for students.
