Professor Jennifer Dixon Takes Baltimore!

On Friday, November 15, Jenny Dixon, Ph.D., Associate Professor and Chair of Communication and Media Arts, presented US Presidential Debates 1948-2016: An Issue of Formality and Respect in the Top Paper panel in the Political Communication Division of the National Communication Association conference in Baltimore, Maryland.
About the Project

This project involved analyzing 210 presidential debates, with a focus on address terms (e.g., “Hillary” vs. “Secretary of State Clinton;” “Senator Ted Cruz vs. “Lyin’ Ted”), all with the goal of mapping out trends in formality and civility. Was 2016 an informal/uncivil blip in American history, or part of a larger trend, shifting us in a direction less substantive public discourse? Who is more formal, Democrats or Republicans?
