Professor Laura Tropp Receives Erving Goffman Award

Laura Tropp, Ph.D., Professor of Communication Arts, received the Erving Goffman Award for Outstanding Scholarship in the Ecology of Social Interaction for her recent book Grandparents in the Digital Age: The Third Act.

Each year, the Media Ecology Association (MEA) presents the Erving Goffman Award for Outstanding Scholarship in the Ecology of Social Interaction, recognizing books or articles that focus on social situations, symbolic interaction, interpersonal communication, nonverbal communication, social space, temporal rhythms, rules of engagement, performance of roles, and the presentation of self in everyday life.

Dr. Tropp received the award at MEA’s 20th Annual Convention Award Gala, held at the University of Toronto, on June 29. Published in December 2018, Grandparents in the Digital Age investigates the changing culture of grandparenting, the growth of the marketing of grandparenting as a new stage of life, and the impact the commodification of grandparenting has on our culture.
