Writer Joyce Chen Talks Freelance Career with Journalism Students

On Wednesday, May 15, students in Freelance Article Writing were in conversation via Zoom with the freelance writer and co-founder of literary arts nonprofit, The Seventh Wave, focusing on portfolio and career building.

After a career that spanned The Daily News and People magazine, Chen took the freelance plunge in 2017 and now writes for a variety of publications including Rolling Stone, Architectural Digest, The KnotToday.com, Literary Hub, and Narratively

During the conversation, Chen spoke with students on how to build their own freelance writing portfolios, stressing the importance of networking and connections in an industry that is in the midst of radical change. She also shared the realities of freelancing from managing budgets to maintaining deadlines. Students were able to ask questions and get a sense of what one career option might look like in the gig economy.

We’re incredibly grateful to her for providing our students such valuable knowledge and advice as they prepare for life after MMC!
