Dr. Jerry Williams Nominated for Poetry Award

Fresh off a year-long sabbatical, Dr. Williams receives nomination for the prestigious Pushcart Prize.

After publishing three poems in the Mississippi Review last Spring, Professor Jerry Williams’ work has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize, the most honored literary project in the United States.

Dr. Williams received a fellowship to the artist colony Yaddo in the summer of 2013. During his residency he met a Korean composer, Seung-Ah Oh, and the two collaborated on her music theater production Words & Beyond II: Nan Sul Hun which opened in Amsterdam. Dr. Williams translated several works of the 16th century Korean poet ChoHee (Nan Sul Hun) and wrote a soliloquy for the title character. A video from the performance is featured below.

In addition, his poetry has been featured for a second time in the Ocean State Review. Check out the link to find an extensive biography of Dr. Williams and to read the text he wrote for another of Oh’s compositions, Aphonic Dialogue–a double cello concerto for voice, cello, and chamber orchestra–which opened in Amsterdam. Also, you can listen to the concerto itself and hear audio files of Williams reading his own work.

And finally, Dr. Williams will read some of his work at the KGB Bar poetry series on Monday, February 9th at 7pm.

We hope you will join our Division in celebrating Dr. Williams’ most recent (and exciting!) accomplishments.
