Dance Major Performs in Russia

Shanna Irwin, soon to be a graduate of Marymount Manhattan College’s Dance Department, was recently invited to dance with Complexions Contemporary Ballet to perform at The Dance Open Festival in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Since January 2014, dance majors have been working on Hissy Fits, choreographed by Co-Founder/Artistic Director of Complexions Contemporary Ballet, Dwight Rhoden. Shanna, along with nine other students, had the opportunity to rehearse with both Dwight Rhoden and Co-Founder/Artistic Director Desmond Richardson along with former company member, Clifford Williams. Because of Shanna’s technical prowess and nuanced artistry, it was only fitting that Shanna was offered an opportunity to fill in for an injured dancer in Complexions.

With only two weeks of rehearsals, Shanna left for Russia to perform at The Dance Open Festival. The company presented three pieces, “Innervisions” and “Moon over Jupiter (2010)”, choreographed by Dwight Rhoden, and “Recur”, choreographed by Jae Man Joo. A representative from Dance Open Festival shared, “… So light, so joyful, so full of fresh air. The dancers evidently enjoy themselves in the waves of music by Stevie Wonder.”

Congratulations to Shanna who will be joining Complexions as an apprentice for the next year!  The Dance Department is so proud of Shanna and the entire Class of 2014.
