Marymount Manhattan College Dance Department awards Scholarship to the Martha Graham School Winter Intensive 2014

Since 2007, the Marymount Manhattan College Dance Department has been given the opportunity to select a deserving student to receive a scholarship to the Martha Graham School Winter and Summer Intensives.  The Martha Graham School makes this special offer to universities around the country where Martha Graham Dance Company alumni are members of the faculty.  Part-time faculty members Lone Larsen and Alessandra Prosperi, who continue to work with the Graham organization, assisted in the selection of the awardees.

Nicholas Burrage, a dance major in his sophomore year who exhibits motivation toward the rigor of dance training in the Graham technique, was selected for the 2014 Winter Intensive scholarship. The scholarship provides partial tuition to the special program in New York City.  He is joined by dance students from twenty other universities as well as students from all over the world who come to discover or strengthen their understanding of Martha Graham’s renowned style of dance.  The Martha Graham Intensives offer rigorous three- or six- week workshops including a daily two-hour Graham technique class, Graham repertory, and dance composition. 

Virginie Mecene, Director of the Martha Graham School, explains that several students who have come to the Graham School through the recommendation of Graham alumni have been selected for Graham 2 and advanced to become members of the Martha Graham Dance Company.  Thus, the Intensive is a perfect link to a professional career upon graduation.

“We are exceptionally grateful to have an ongoing relationship with the Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance,” states Katie Langan, Chair of the Dance Department. “Many of those who have received the scholarship would not have been able to attend otherwise, and it is true that a few of them have gone on to dance with either the second or main Company.”

“We are thankful for the work of our alumni who perpetuate the Graham legacy in major institutions all over the country, and we’re happy to support their students with a scholarship to our Winter and Summer Intensive each year” says Janet Eilber, Artistic Director of the Martha Graham Dance Company.
