Math Professor Presents at The 6-th International Conference in Physics

Lia Margolin, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Mathematics, presented a talk, “Constructing Fully Anti-Symmetric Four-Body Wave Functions Including Spin, Isospin, and Hyperspherical Parts,” at the 6-th International Conference in Physics (EuroPhysics2020).

The 6-th International Conference in Physicswas scheduled to take place at the University of Barcelona in Spain. However, due to COVID19 travel restrictions, it was live streamed on June 15-16, 2020, via Cisco WebEx meetings platform. The theme of the conference was Power of the Past & Force of the Future in Physics.

The conference provided a premier technical forum for reporting and learning about the latest research and development, as well as the launching of new applications and technologies, and featured a wide range of session tracks. Dr. Margolin presented her research on June 15, 2020 at the Theoretical Nuclear Physics session. She discussed how to solve the problem of the construction of the four-body wave functions, anti-symmetric under particle interchange. These functions are necessary for the description of the structure and decays of the four-body nuclear and hypernuclear systems. This presentation was a continuation of Dr.Margolin’s research presented at MENU2019 International Conference in Meson-Nucleon Physics held at Carnegie Mellon University. This work was published by the American Institute of Physics (AIP).

Dr. Margolin continues her research in Nuclear Physics. She has been invited to present a talk, “Solving Hyperspherical Basis Transformation Problem for Four-, Five-, and Six-Body Systems by the Use of Recurrence Method,” at ICNP-2020: International Conference on Nuclear Physics in July, the premier interdisciplinary forum for the presentation of new advances and research results in the fields of nuclear physics. This conference is organized by the the International Research Conference Scientific and Technical Committee, for which Dr. Margolin serves as a member of the Editorial Review Board on Nuclear and Quantum Engineering.

Math Department Holds The Eleventh Annual Pi-Day Contest

Every year, the Mathematics department holds a College-wide π-Day contest. Students, faculty, and staff are invited to submit an original sentence, paragraph, poem, or short story that uses the digits of π in order (π ≈ 3.1415926..).
