  • Katelyn Kelly '17

In my senior year, I gained experience as a Buying Intern for a company called Steven Alan. I interned in the Women’s Wear division, where I created and revised purchase orders for 24 locations nationwide. I have long wanted to pursue a career in fashion buying, and so this was the perfect opportunity for me!

I also loved the self-designed courses, which is the best aspect of the IDS major since this is one’s opportunity to learn outside of classroom walls and bring back experiences that will advance you in your college career and beyond. I created a couple of courses, one of which explored turtle conservation efforts in Costa Rica, where I traveled to work hands-on with turtle-nest relocation and data gathering. I also explored a course on Native Hawaiian plants and how the use of GMO’s in the Hawaiian Islands is in contradiction with local cultural beliefs. I have to say that experiencing the issues is very different than reading about it in a book – I believe it is of greater impact, and meeting people related to the topics you are studying is also very beneficial and helps you to grow as a person.

A true testament to a school is its teachers. I was trained by teachers that I will consider mentors for the rest of my life. Plus, I got to go to college in NYC!

The small class sizes and culture cultivated by faculty encouraged genuine connection between myself and my classmates, and I always felt like we had each other’s backs creatively and beyond.

Being a psychology major and neuroscience minor at MMC prepared me for my graduate studies (Mental Health Counseling). Having previous knowledge on Epigenetics among other important topics from my neuroscience courses has helped me be a step ahead in most of my graduate courses today. My Psych and Neuroscience courses provided me with indispensable skills that taught me how to read and comprehend journal articles in addition to a full year learning how to use SPSS for statistical analysis. I’m a step ahead in my program because of the challenging psych and neuroscience courses I enrolled in at MMC.

A few 📸 from yesterday’s Orientation Musical, directed and choreographed by Theatre Arts Professor Emily Clark and starring some of our super-talented Theatre students, who very generously gave their time and energy to rehearse and perform. The show, co-written by Clark and her students over the years, explored common fears among first years. Amazing job, everyone. We loved it! #nycstudents #nyccolleges ##theatrestudents

How sweet it is! 📸 1-3: Catch baker, blogger, cookbook author, and TV personality Dan Langan ’12 on the @QVCHSNPlus series “Dishin’ It.” And, for an extra special treat, watch the 8/11 episode, which features fellow MMC alum Ashley Hearon-Smith ’07! Ashley—host of @qvchsnplus’s “LifeStyled” and host and producer of @momtouragepodcast—will also appear on the show this Sunday.   📸 4. That's Isabella Paragas ’27, a double major in Musical Theatre and Business, and thee Jason Gotay ’11! Besides MMC, they share something in common: @sacmusicals, California's largest nonprofit arts organization. Jason starred in its recent production of "Sunset Boulevard," and Isabella's been working as an education and community engagement assistant for the organization this summer. Among other things, her team helps make theatre more accessible for blind and visually impaired fans, children, and underrepresented groups. We're doubly proud! 💙 #theatre #theatrearts #nyccolleges #theatrestudents
