Externship Program

The Marymount Manhattan College Counseling and Wellness Center (CWC) offers psychology externships in college mental health. We emphasize training in brief treatment approaches, diagnostic formulation, outreach programming, and referral skills.

Externs carry a caseload of 9 clients per week, meet weekly with individual supervisors, have weekly group supervision, participate in a weekly didactic seminar and have opportunities to participate in outreach events and workshops (such as managing the CWC Instagram account and posting weekly “Mental Health Mondays” videos). Because CWC is a small, close-knit center, this externship offers an excellent opportunity to play a central and collaborative role in a thriving college counseling center.

COVID-19 Update

The CWC is currently operating under a telemental health model (video/phone sessions). All sessions, supervision and didactics are being conducted remotely. Due to the ever- evolving situation, it has not yet been determined whether the CWC will continue to operate remotely during the 2021-22 academic year, though it is possible/likely that the CWC will use a hybrid model of in-person and remote sessions. Please inquire with Dr. Giordano if you have questions about this.

Who Can Apply?

All levels of doctoral students in Clinical/Counseling Psychology programs are invited to apply. We are not currently accepting applications from students in Counseling/Clinical MA programs. Experience in intake, assessment, and DSM-5 diagnostic formulations is preferred.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion:

Marymount Manhattan College is an inclusive community. Inherent in our mission is the commitment to diversity among our students, faculty, and staff.

The CWC is strongly committed to supporting MMC’s mission, and we welcome applications from all qualified students regardless of race, ethnicity, religious faith, sexual orientation, age, or disability status as defined by applicable law. Doctoral students from minority groups that have been historically under-represented are highly encouraged to apply.

Details About the Externship:

The externship consists of 16 hours per week, from late August through late May. Mondays are a required day, and externs must be available one other day that is NOT Friday. There is some flexibility with scheduling, such as the possibility of being on site for half days if class schedules interfere with being present for a full day. All externs are required to carry professional liability insurance.

To Apply:

Please submit your cover letter, curriculum vitae, and two letters of recommendation to Dr. Giordano through the APA externship portal. If you have difficulty with this site, applications can be emailed to Dr. Giordano at Dgiordano@mmm.edu. NOTE: applications will not be considered until ALL application materials have been received.

Application Dates and Info:

Following the PSIDNYS and NYNJADOT guidelines, applications can be uploaded to the portal starting on Jan 11, 2021, and interviews will begin on January 25, 2021. There is no application deadline. However, interviews typically commence quickly, so students are advised to apply as soon as possible.

There are 2 externship positions available for the 2021-22 academic year. Externship offers will be made beginning on Monday, March 8, 2021 at 9 a.m.
