An Impactful New Major

The Politics and Human Rights major now offered at Bedford Hills

Since its inception in 1997, the Bedford Hills College Program (BHCP) has offered only one major in both the Associate of Arts and Bachelor of Arts programs: Sociology. This fall, the program announced a second major option: Politics and Human Rights.

The Politics and Human Rights major supports both student interests and post-release career paths, and is already amplifying the depth of the academic program. The curriculum prepares students for a wide range of careers in the nonprofit, government, and business sectors. It also provides an excellent foundation for graduate study in law, journalism, business, management, and the social sciences. For students with longer prison sentences, the Politics and Human Rights major also offers an understanding of the broader political dynamics that influence all communities, even within the prison system itself.

Taconic Student Granted Clemency

On December 24, 2020, Governor Andrew Cuomo granted clemency to an MMC student completing her studies at the Taconic Correctional Facility, citing a clear demonstration of significant rehabilitation and a commitment to her community. Only 21 incarcerated people were granted clemency in 2020 out of more than 1,000 requests from New York State inmates.
