Academic Writing Professor to Lead Talk at New York Comics Symposium, Moderate NYPL Panel

Dr. Tahneer Oksman is slated to give her presentation, “Drawing on Grief,” at The New School’s New York Comics & Picture-Story Symposium on May 7, as well as moderate New York Public Library’s June “LGBTQ Coming-of-Age Comics” panel.

Acclaimed cartoonist and illustrator Ben Katchor has run the now well-known weekly lecture series, The New York Comics & Picture-Story Symposium, since 2012 at Parsons, explains Oksman. “He invites artists, researchers, and others in the industry to talk about their work.” Oksman first gave a lecture there in 2013, on the topic of what later became her first book, which was then still a dissertation. “I’m looking forward to going back to discuss comics memoirs that are about experiences of grief and loss–my current book project.”

In addition to her lecture at The New School, Oksman will moderate a panel in early June at the New York Public Library on LGBTQ coming-of-age comics. Despite a trending decline in book publishing, the interest and investment in comics, graphic novels, and graphic memoirs in colleges, by the public at large, and for people of all ages, Oksman notes, has been steadily on the rise. “I’m proud to be part of that.”
