Juneteenth is today and it is the commemoration of the last enslaved people to be freed in Texas, years AFTER the Emancipation Proclamation. This relatively new national holiday may still be confusing to people outside of the African diaspora in the United States. This HuffPost article gives great suggestions for ways to participate. Among the suggestions are:
- Encourage your kids’ schools to recognize and give lessons on Juneteenth.
- Buy from Black-owned businesses.
- Reflect on the meaning of Juneteenth.
- Reach out to the Black people in your life and ask them what the day means to them.
- Make your own Juneteenth traditions.
- Figure out how you can be a better ally and advocate the rest of the year.
