Why Study English and World Literatures?

The English and World Literatures major understands the power of the written word across genres, histories, and cultures.

Why Study English and World Literatures at MMC?

At MMC, you’ll experience a program tailored to your interests. You will find classes on Chaucer and Shakespeare, but you could also take courses on Caribbean or African literature, writing creative nonfiction, and the films of Pedro Almodovar over the course of your college career. Individualize your curriculum through independent studies. Broaden your global perspective through study abroad. Many students double major or minor at the college, finding that the skills gained in EWL extend to all their academic and creative pursuits.

As an upper-level student, you may serve as a Teaching Apprentice in a lower-level course, assist a professor as a Research Apprentice, or even pursue our joint BA/MS in publishing program with Pace University to get an early start on your career. You may also choose to join the editorial team of the Carson Review, our literary magazine, or The Monitor, the school newspaper.

    What You Will Learn

Attention to career development is integrated into our curriculum: develop critical reading, writing, research, and thinking skills essential for success not only in your academic work but also in your professional lives beyond the classroom. Concentrations

    Creative Writing Concentration

Study and compose poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction in a collaborative, comprehensive fashion. Workshop-based courses provide students with an expansive awareness of the different critical traditions that shape literary history. It’s all about the process: creative spark to draft, revision, submission, and publication.

    Literature Concentration

The Literature Concentration at MMC goes beyond the usual reading lists with its global, cross-cultural approach. And the program also goes beyond simply reading: our students analyze, interpret, discuss, and debate the meaning of compelling texts, classic and contemporary.

    Literature and Media Concentration

The Literature and Media concentration extends students writing, analytical, and research skills to understand and interpret various media, including film, television, and new technology. This is EWL’s home for budding filmmakers, video documentarians, long-form journalists, fan fiction writers, and social media practitioners who bring literary sensibilities to their work.
