Since graduation, Sarah Insalaco has been preserving history as an AmeriCorps member, first in Duluth, Minnesota, and then Clarksburg, West Virginia. With the mission “to improve lives, strengthen communities, and foster civic engagement through service and volunteering,” AmeriCorps volunteers are selected and paid to serve across the nation in all sorts of community service projects.

Sarah worked first with Northern Bedrock Historic Preservation Corps in Minnesota, where she traveled across the state helping restore and preserve historic barns, cabins, churches, and cemeteries. Her next post was at the Harrison County West Virginia Historical Society, where she tells us she did a little bit of everything—social media management, event planning, archiving, public relations, and exhibit building. “Please tell your students AmeriCorps is an AMAZING OPPORTUNITY,” Sarah shared. “You gain so much experience, plus you can defer your loans during service, you receive an education award to spend on loans or further education, and you’ll have more opportunity in the future with careers.” After her time with AmeriCorps, Sarah is planning on returning to graduate school for archives management training.
