John Basil founded American Globe Theatre in New York City in 1988, and for 25 years was the Producing Artistic Director. He regularly teaches his “Playing Shakespeare” intensive in NYC and across the country. John has taught Shakespeare and acting at Drew University, Montclair University, Rutgers University, C.W. Post Long Island University, Penn State University, Asolo Conservatory, Bradley University, University of Colorado, University of Wyoming, Elon University and Columbia Teachers College. In addition he has taught Shakespeare workshops at the high school level and for the NYC Arts Connection’s outreach program, “Children of Hope.” He has directed for American Globe Theatre, Riverside Shakespeare Company, Ensemble Studio Theatre, American Shakespeare Centre, American Stage Festival and Sarasota Opera, in addition to guest artist positions at many universities. John is the author of Will Power: How to Act Shakespeare in 21 Days (Applause, 2006).

Most recently for MMC, John Ford’s Tis Pity She’s a Whore. Previously for MMC: Beaux Strategem, As you Like It and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. In 2017 John directed Madame Butterfly for Sarasota Opera.
Additionally, Mr. Basil currently teaches workshops for Columbia Teacher’s College, Elon University, NYU and Broadway Classroom.
Research
John’s book WillPower: How to Act Shakespeare in 21 Days was published by Applause in 2006 and is now in its second printing.
Teaching
For 25 years John led the American Globe Theatre Conservatory where he taught a series of Shakespeare intensives. He continues to offers the course every summer including workshops for Columbia Teacher’s College, Elon University, NYU and Broadway Classroom.
Professional Experience
John produced and directed over 25 works of Shakespeare as Artistic Director of American Globe Theatre for 25 years. For American Globe, John directed a multitude of Shakespeare’s work some of which include Henry V, Othello, Macbeth, Hamlet, The Winter’s Tale, King Lear, Titus Andronicus, and The Merchant of Venice. Regionally, John has also directed works of great diversity—from Twelfth Night, Richard III, and Candida to Neil Simon’s Proposals—for the American Shakespeare Center in V.A. , the Asolo Theater and American Stage Festival in Florida, Bradley University in Illinois, and the University of Colorado. Six seasons at Sarasota Opera where John’s most recent project was Madame Butterfly.
