In addition to serving as an early voting location on October 31 and November 1, Marymount Manhattan College is thrilled to showcase how members of the community are working to get out the vote and educate their peers on the 2020 election and its surrounding conversations.
Early Voting Location Added at Marymount Manhattan College
On Friday, October 30, MMC announced it was approved by the New York State Board of Elections as an additional early voting location for Saturday and Sunday. The added site was championed by New York State Assembly Member Rebecca Seawright after long lines and wait times plagued the only other Upper East Side location, Robert F. Wagner Middle School. “MMC is proud to support the American democratic process and to protect the nation’s most fundamental right—the right to vote,” MMC’s President Kerry Walk, Ph.D. shared in a statement. MMC Students Prepare to Vote
Marymount Manhattan College’s student-run digital newspaper, The Monitor, has released a voting guide for Generation Z voters and fellow students. Written by Communications Arts major Imani Rivera, Digital Journalism major Rayiah Ross, Journalism and Politics & Human Rights double major Averee Nelson, and Digital Journalism major Shelby Hall, the guide provides in-depth overviews of the history and practices of the presidential election and how it relates to Generation Z students in California, Massachusetts, New York, and Virginia.
Alumna Encourages Voting in Home State
Meghan Keeney ’20, a former Monitor writer and alumna of MMC’s Dance and Digital journalism programs, was recently published by The News Tribune for an article on voter turnout within her home state of Washington. After exploring voting statistics and behaviors, Keeney urges those eligible to make their voices heard, whether that’s by mail or in person.
The Pandemic Election of 2020: A Virtual Event at MMC
On October 22, MMC’s Institute for Professional and Advanced Studies, Alumni Relations, and Center for Learning and Living presented The Pandemic Election of 2020, featuring Associate Professor of Political Science at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, Susan Kang, and Assistant Professor of Communication and Media Arts, Tatiana Serafin.
Prof. Kang, whose research focuses on economic and social rights, addressed voter protection and the resurgence of grassroots activism in electoral politics in New York City and New York State. Prof. Serafin, award-winning journalist and podcast host, spoke on the role of social media platforms in this year’s highly contentious national, state, and local elections.

Third Annual Emotional Intelligence Symposium On November 3 from 1–2 p.m., MMC’s Career Services and Counseling and Wellness Center are hosting an event to provide participants with a foundation in understanding Emotional Intelligence (EQ) and how to strengthen their own EQ. This year, the two keynote presentations are by Associate Professor of Psychology, Nava Silton, Ph.D., and Chief Operating Officer at the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund, Christine Gregory, Esq. Extended Drop-In hours at CWC
On November 4, 5, and 6 from noon–4 p.m., the Counseling and Wellness Center is expanding their “Drop-In” hours for the days following the election. Sessions will be held via phone or video. Post-Election Mindfulness On November 5 at 5 p.m., join Suzanne Sorrentino from the Counseling and Wellness Center to learn and practice mindfulness after a stressful election.
Politics and Human Rights Event Series: Fair Elections On November 9 from 6–7 p.m., join special guest Jabari Brisport, Democratic nominee for NYS 25th State Senate, actor, activist, and teacher in NYC, as he discusses elections in the current political climate. This event is brought to you by the Department of Politics and Human Rights in collaboration with the Department of International Studies.

Every year, the Mathematics department holds a College-wide π-Day contest. Students, faculty, and staff are invited to submit an original sentence, paragraph, poem, or short story that uses the digits of π in order (π ≈ 3.1415926..).
