Theatre Faculty Premieres New Play at Contemporary American Theater Festival

Antonio Edwards Suarez, MFA, Assistant Professor of Theatre Arts, premiered his new one-man show, Antonio’s Song/I Was Dreaming of a Son, on July 5 at the Contemporary American Theater Festival at Shepherd University in West Virginia.

Written by Suarez and Dael Orlandersmith, Antonio’s Song follows the journey of a dancer/artist/father questioning the balance of his passions—art, culture, family— and asks what does it mean to be a son? A father? What does it mean to be a man in today’s new world?

Directed by Mark Clements with choreography and movement direction by Alexandra Beller, this 90-minute solo/movement drama was sponsored in part by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Dramatists Guild Foundation.

Visit the official festival page for ticket information and to hear an interview with the playwrights.

About the 2019 Contemporary American Theater Festival

In the beginning was the WORD, and the word was uttered by a STORYTELLER. Storytelling is the bedrock of civilization. From the moment we become aware of others, we demand to be told stories that allow us to make sense of the world, to inhabit the mind of someone else.

The 2019 CATF Repertory reminds us of the unique story-telling and story-listening power of theater. These plays create links between people and build bridges between different minds and different worlds. They remind us that whenever we listen, how we tell our story is certain to change because our story will be less about ourselves and more about what’s going on around and outside of us.

Congratulations, Professor Suarez!
