Michael Lewis Mejia ’10 Cast in “In the Heights” and Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story” Remake

Congratulations to Class of 2010’s Michael Lewis Mejia (BA Theatre, Musical Theatre minor) who has been cast in two highly-anticipated movie musicals, both set to be released in 2020: In the Heights and West Side Story.

These projects serve as a brilliant return to performing for Mejia, who took a break from acting after his father, Luis, passed away. Throughout this time, Mejia’s close friends encouraged him to share his creative passion with others and helped convince him to audition for In the Heights. After nearly a month and a half of waiting after the audition, Mejia got the call. “I held the phone in my hand and in the middle of 13th and 1st I jumped and screamed and ran my excited butt home and called my mom,” he says.

Filming for In the Heights wrapped for Mejia in mid-June after several weeks of long days on set in upper Manhattan. One of many highlights of the process (and posted on his Instagram, @instamikeyp3) is a photo with In the Heights creator (and Broadway superstar) Lin Manuel-Miranda.

Earlier this year, Mejia also auditioned for Steven Spielberg’s remake of the 1961 classic West Side Story and signed a contract to join the cast as part of the ensemble on June 3. Filming began in mid-June.

Congratulations, Michael! We can’t wait to see you on the silver screen!
