Making Connections at the Career Summit - Madeline Nortz ’20

Last Wednesday I had the opportunity to not only attend, but also lead a discussion panel for The Office of Career Services Annual Career Summit. The event featured a keynote speaker on financial literacy, as well as multiple industry panels and a networking lunch complete with raffle prizes. The day began with check-in and breakfast before settling in to listen to Galia Gichon, an independent personal financial expert with more than 19 years of experience in financial services. Gichon talked about “keeping your $20s in your 20s” and covered topics from personal budgeting to establishing the right retirement fund for you. Gichon managed to provide information relevant to a wide range of students who are beginning to apply for credits cards, pay off student debts, and enter the workforce.

After the presentation, students and employers broke off into Industry Panel Breakout Sessions for different industries. Panels included Communication Media/Tech, Business, Media Production, Non-profit/Social Good, Fine & Performing Arts, and Health & Wellness. As a Strategic Communications major, I had the opportunity to lead the Communication Media/Tech panel that featured employers from HBO, The NBC Universal Page Program, and Allison+Partners PR firm, including some Marymount Manhattan Alumni. Students were provided an in-depth look at how these industry professionals came to work in their careers.

Through our discussion, students learned the importance of internships and taking advantage of their time at school, as well as industry tips and tricks for getting ahead and standing out amongst a sea of applicants. It was a wonderful opportunity for students to have their questions answered and make some valuable connections in their future industries.

The Networking Lunch preceding Industry Panels allowed students to take head shots for their LinkedIn profiles as well as win raffle prizes from the attending companies. It was an incredibly valuable event for all who attended.
