Dr. Emma J. Rosi to Deliver 2019 Barry Commoner Lecture on the Environment
Her talk, titled Our Rivers on Drugs: Pharmaceutical Compounds as Agents of Ecological Change in Aquatic Ecosystems, will explore research frontiers in urban ecology and the extent to which contaminants may interact with other urban stressors to drive ecological processes.
Dr. Rosi received her Ph.D. from the University of Georgia. Her research focuses on how human activities affect aquatic life and water quality in diverse ecosystems around the world. She is particularly interested in measuring how novel and emerging contaminants—such as pharmaceuticals and personal care products—affect aquatic food webs. In addition to water quality issues, her work examines aquatic food webs in general and the role of large wildlife (like the hippopotamus and wildebeest) in riverine nutrient cycling. Her research seeks to inform sound stewardship of freshwater resources, and she often speaks to the public and policymakers.
The Barry Commoner Lecture on the Environment was established at Marymount Manhattan College through the generosity of Richard S. Berry and Lucy A. Commoner. These gifts have also created The Commoner Fund for Environmental Studies at the College. Barry Commoner was a prominent environmental scientist, widely known as a writer and lecturer on the relationship between environmental and energy problems and public policy.
