Rosie Wenrich presented her work on the chemistry of marine microalgae at Fordham University this past Saturday.
On Saturday, May 6, 2017, senior Biology major Rosie Wenrich delivered an oral presentation at the 65th Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium of the American Chemical Society, which was held at Fordham University in the Bronx. Rosie spoke about the research she conducts with Prof. Alessandra Leri on the chemistry of organic matter in the oceans. Her talk was entitled “Oxidation-Induced Changes in Marine Biomass: From Phytoplankton to Sedimentary Organic Matter.” Rosie’s work examines the molecular structure of highly recalcitrant forms of carbon. The goal of her research is to elucidate the natural mechanisms by which carbon is sequestered on the ocean floor, away from the atmosphere.

As MMC worked to reopen its Main Campus for the Fall 2020 semester, the Department of Natural Sciences developed a plan to continue performing in-person laboratory courses while also accommodating remote learners. MMC’s science labs underwent extensive safety reinforcement to allow in-person students to participate in labs with their remote partners learning from home.
