Two Biology Alumnae Publish Research in Multimedia Science Journal

Working with Prof. Ann Aguanno, Biology alumnae Victoria McIlrath ’15 and Alice Trye ’15 have published a paper in the Journal of Visualized Experiments (JoVE), a peer-reviewed scientific video journal.

Using the laboratory skills and thorough background in biology they gained at MMC, alumnae Victoria McIlrath and Alice Trye developed a teaching activity to help instruct undergraduate biology students about cell biology and experimental cell culture. McIlrath and Trye are co-first authors on the paper “Using Mouse Mammary Tumor Cells to Teach Core Biology Concepts: A Simple Lab Module,” which was published on June 8th, 2015, in the Journal of Visualized Experiments (JoVE). JoVE provides a unique forum for dissemination of scientific information through videos that demonstrate lab protocols and techniques. McIlrath and Trye filmed the video segment for the journal on January 20th in the MMC Biology lab.

McIlrath and Trye both conducted research with Dr. Ann Aguanno, who is also an author on the paper. Publication of this research in the cutting-edge JoVE journal is a clear demonstration of the multimedia emphasis in the liberal arts programs at MMC, with scientific methods and principles presented both in traditional written form and on film.

Safety Precautions and Synchronous Learning: MMC Laboratories in the Time of COVID

As MMC worked to reopen its Main Campus for the Fall 2020 semester, the Department of Natural Sciences developed a plan to continue performing in-person laboratory courses while also accommodating remote learners. MMC’s science labs underwent extensive safety reinforcement to allow in-person students to participate in labs with their remote partners learning from home.
