Student Advisor Relationship
STUDENT ADVISOR RELATIONSHIP
At Marymount Manhattan College (MMC), each student is assigned a faculty advisor from their major/field of study. The student advisor relationship is a mutual process in which the student and the faculty advisor assume responsibilities for degree completion and successful academic experience at MMC.
Faculty Advisor’s responsibilities include:
- Being knowledgeable about graduation requirements
- Providing academic advice pertaining to field of study/concentration, graduate study, and career plans
- Being knowledgeable about academic standards and policies
- Maintaining adequate office hours throughout the semester
- Being familiar with student’s interests, goals, & capabilities
- Being familiar with the college’s resources/support services and make appropriate referrals
- Serving as a sounding board
- Recommending courses to register for the upcoming semester (your advisor’s signature is required on your course registration form)
- Encouraging students to take part in opportunities beyond the classroom such as internships/study abroad
- Serving as a mentor and helping students learn about MMC
Student’s responsibilities include:
- Be familiar with degree programs and requirements at the college
- Discuss any problems that affect your academic performance
- Discuss academic policies and procedures for which requires clarification
- Explore opportunities for academic and intellectual growth
- Discuss withdrawal from a course
- Follow through on advisor recommendations
- Discuss changes in major and/or the addition of a minor
- Accept ultimate responsibility for their decisions
- Make use of all resources on campus
- Develop a self-awareness of your academic progress
