Two MMC Students Named Watson Fellows

Marymount Manhattan College students Alex-Quan Minh Pham and Emily Garcia are among the 15 students named as this year’s Watson Fellows.

In addition to internships, Watson Fellows participate in rich pre-professional and cultural programming that exposes them to disciplines and national thought-leaders that greatly expand their definition of self, success and career choice. Combined with close mentoring, Watson Fellows compete successfully for graduate school, national and international fellowships and competitive professional positions.

Alex-Quan Minh Pham, of Fountain Valley, California, is a freshman, pursuing a major in English & World Literature, with a double minor in Creative Writing and Gender & Sexuality Studies.  He is trilingual, speaking English, Spanish and Vietnamese. Alex was selected for the College’s Honor’s Program and appears on the Dean’s List. He is a participant in the College’s Emerging Leaders Program and is a Student Editor for the Marymount Manhattan Review.

Emily Garcia, of Brooklyn, is a freshman, with a double major in International Studies and Business Management. She is a participant in the Emerging Leaders Program, the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program, and appears on the Dean’s List.  Additionally, she is involved with GallopNYC, which provides a therapeutic outlet to individuals with disabilities through horse-back riding.  

Watson awardees come from 12 select New York City colleges, including Marymount Manhattan. From over 125 applicants, 48 finalists were nominated to compete at the citywide level, from which only 15 were selected.

Over 200 Jeannette K. Watson Fellows have been named since the Fellowship’s founding in 1999. Its comprehensive internship program has included over 150 internship organizations in more than 30 countries. Fellows are represented in America’s top graduate programs across many disciplines including law, medicine, public policy, business and the arts. They are the recipients of numerous Fulbright awards, Harry S. Truman Scholarships, as well as many Coro, Peace Corp, Teach for America, NYC Teaching and NYC Urban Fellowships. Fellows are professionally represented among international, domestic and community organizations that set the standard in their sector and field.
