Grading Accommodations Policy for Fall 2020

Students are strongly encouraged to speak with their faculty advisors before deciding to Withdraw from a class and/or to take a P grade in a class.

Withdrawing from a class and/or request the pass/fail option may impact a student’s eligibility for financial aid and scholarships. In addition to speaking with their faculty advisors, students can seek further information from the Office of Academic Advisement (advisement@mmm.edu) and/or a financial aid counselor (financialaid@mmm.edu).

Withdraw Policy – W and WF grades

We have extended the date to officially withdraw from one class with a W grade. Students may submit such requests by 5:00PM on Monday, December 21, 2020. Students need to email the Advisement Office (advisement@mmm.edu) to make such requests.

Students who officially withdraw from one class will earn a W grade, which is not included in the student’s GPA. Students do not earn credit for this class.

Students who have already withdrawn from one class with a W grade and plan to withdraw from additional classes should request a WF grade. We have also extended the date to request a WF grade to 5:00PM on Monday, December 21, 2020. Students need to email the Advisement Office (advisement@mmm.edu) to make such requests.

The WF grade is equivalent to an F and is calculated as such in the student’s GPA. However, students who officially receive a WF grade may petition for a Grade Waiver. Through the Grade Waiver program, students who receive a D, F, or WF may repeat the same course and only have the second grade they receive in the repeated class factor into their GPA. The first grade remains on the student’s transcript but it is not be factored into the GPA. If a student wants to consider the Grade Waiver option, they must receive a D, F or WF grade.

Students are strongly encouraged to speak with an academic advisor and/or a financial aid advisor before deciding which grade would be best for their specific circumstance. Withdrawals from any course can impact financial aid if students drop from full-time to part-time status. Also, multiple W grades over several semesters may impact students’ progress towards degree completion, which can also impact financial aid. Please email advisement@mmm.edu or financialaid@mmm.edu to speak with someone about the impact of withdrawing from classes.

Pass/Fail Grading Option—IMPORTANT UPDATE

Students may choose to request “P” (Pass) grades in their Fall 2020 classes according to the following guidelines:

• Between Spring 2020 and Fall 2020, students can earn a total of 12 credits through “P” grades. This means that if a student earned credits through “P” grades last semester, this will determine how many additional credits they can earn through “P” grades in Fall 2020. The combined total for Spring 2020 and Fall 2020 cannot exceed 12 credits.
• If a student has already earned a total of 12 credits through “P” grades, they may request special permission to request a “P” grade in one additional class. This request for special permission will be included on the form they will submit at the end of the semester.
• Students may request “P” grades in any Fall 2020 class without restriction (major/minor/concentration requirements; general education requirements; electives; independent studies; internships). For Spring 2020 and Fall 2020 only, “P” grades will fulfill any requirements.
• “P” grades are not calculated in the student’s GPA. Failing (F) grades cannot be changed and are computed in the student’s GPA.

Students request “P” grades through the following process:

• Students will receive FINAL LETTER GRADES in all of their classes.
• Upon receiving their final grades, students may submit an online form to request a “P” grade in class in any class in which they received a grade of D or higher.
• Once received, approved, and processed, the grade in the selected courses will be converted to “P.”
• Students can submit these requests beginning Monday, December 21, 2020,and must do so no later than 5:00pm on Friday, January 8, 2021. On that date, the “P” grade request is final and cannot be reversed.
• Requests for “P” grades will only be approved up to the limit of 12 credits for the Spring 2020 and Fall 2020 semesters. Requests to exceed this limit will be reviewed and approved by the VPAA/Dean on a case-by-case basis. Students will be notified by email whether or not requests to exceed the 12-credit limit are approved.

If students have questions about whether requesting a P grade is the best option for them, they should speak with their professors and/or faculty advisors.

Incomplete Grades

Students may still receive a grade of “I” (Incomplete) for courses taken in the Fall 2020 semester. They must discuss this grade with their instructors prior to the grade being submitted. The “I” grade is only granted when students have satisfactorily completed the majority of required coursework but are unable to complete final requirements due to unforeseen circumstances. The student and instructor must develop an agreed-upon plan for completing outstanding requirements and submitting them in a timely way so that the instructor can grade this work and submit the required form to convert the incomplete to a final grade before the deadline, which is Monday, March 1, 2021. All College policies related to Incomplete grades remain in effect.
