MMC Professor Wins Two Emmys

(New York, NY) Assistant professor of teacher education, Twila Liggett, received two Daytime Emmy Awards as the executive producer of the program Reading Rainbow. The program’s founder, Dr. Liggett served as the executive producer from the show’s inception in 1983 until the fall of 2006.

Nominated for seven awards this year, the program was recognized with wins in the categories of Outstanding Children’s Series and Outstanding Writing in a Children’s Series.

Reading Rainbow has earned over 250 awards in more than twenty seasons. Some of the honors the series has received include 24 Emmys, a prestigious Peabody, six international Priz Jeunesse Awards, nine Parents Choice Awards and nine Cine Golden Eagles.

Dr. Liggett holds a Ph.D. in Curriculum, Instruction and Administration from the University of Nebraska, a MA in Elementary Education from the University of Nebraska and a BS in Secondary and Music Education from Union College in Nebraska. Marymount Manhattan awarded Dr. Liggett an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters in 2001.

She has published extensively on a variety of topics. Most recently, Dr. Liggett wrote Just Read Anything: How to Raise Intelligent, Literate Kids, a book geared to parents that’s currently in proposal form.

The Children’s Emmy Awards were given as part of the 34th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles on June 15.

Math Department Holds The Eleventh Annual Pi-Day Contest

Every year, the Mathematics department holds a College-wide π-Day contest. Students, faculty, and staff are invited to submit an original sentence, paragraph, poem, or short story that uses the digits of π in order (π ≈ 3.1415926..).
