Prof. Sue Behrens Published in ‘Journal on Excellence in College Teaching’

Professor Susan Behrens

Dr. Behrens and her co-author discuss how teaching centers within colleges and universities benefit from being directed by professional linguists. A core argument is that faculty need to increase their metalinguistic knowledge—meaning that the better they interpret language, the better they can teach students and avoid misconceptions. This awareness of the variation and nuance in language will promote inclusivity in classrooms, and students will feel respected and understood.

Along with this newly published article, Dr. Behrens is the author of seven books, 29 academic chapters, and 18 editorially-reviewed articles. She has presented research at 28 conferences, and, in addition to her role as Chair of the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, she is the Director of the Center for Teaching Innovation and Excellence.
