MMC Teacher Education Students Complete NYSTCE with 100% Passing Rate

(New York, NY) All 11 Marymount Manhattan students who took the New York State Teacher Certification Examinations (NYSTCE) for the 2006-2007 program year have passed.

NYSTCE assesses the level of professional knowledge and pedagogy, which are essential in order to fulfill the duties of educators in New York State public schools.

“We are thrilled to share this news about the success of our TE students,” says Roger Zeeman, chair of the Teacher Education Department and assistant professor of teacher education, “and look forward to the abundant contributions they will make as teachers throughout New York State.”

The NYSTCE program measures candidate’s knowledge and skills in the liberal arts and sciences, teaching theory and practice and the content area for those who seek certification in secondary education. Candidates are required to achieve passing scores on the Liberal Arts and Sciences Test (LAST), the elementary or the secondary version of the Assessment of Teaching Skills-Written (ATS–W), and a Content Specialty Test (CST) in their area of certification.

Eleven of the MMC candidates took the LAST and the ATS-W. Five students took the Elementary ATS-W, for teaching students up to the 6th grade level and spanning knowledge of early childhood and childhood. Six students took the Secondary ATS-W, for teaching students up to the 12th grade level and requiring knowledge of middle childhood and adolescence. These six students also took the CST in subjects including English language arts, dance and theater.

All of the Teacher Education Programs at Marymount Manhattan College are registered and approved by the New York State Education Department. New York State has reciprocal rights for certification in some 48 states across the country. In order to become eligible for New York State Certification, outside of passing the NYSTCE, the students have also fulfilled the requirements of maintaining a G.P.A. of 2.75 or better and earned at least a B minus grade in all required education courses.
