MMC’s Nutz and Boltz of Comedy Compete in Rooftop Comedy National College Comedy Competition

(New York, NY) Eight Marymount Manhattan students from the Nutz and Boltz of Comedy will represent the College as they compete with 32 colleges and universities across the country in the Rooftop Comedy National College Comedy Competition. On March 7, Rooftop Comedy hosted an on-campus talent search contest for student comedians. Eight students made it to semi-finals.

The semi-finalists from MMC include: Shane Snider, AJ Cote, Liana Rowe, Van Corona, Abraham Blanko Jr., Sam Carcamo, Sam Rogal and Kevin Shimko. The “Big Fan Winner” at the March 7 event was Jessica Dragonetti. In addition to stand-up, the competition also includes short comedic film. The short film contestants from MMC thus far include Chelsea Phillips, Jessica Agi, Shane Snider, Tyler Neale and Van Corona.

The next step will be the regional semi-finals, where MMC students will compete with students from Farleigh Dickinson University on April 13 at Comix, located at 353 West 14th Street. Stand-up competitions will be held at 16 prestigious comedy venues throughout the country. The audience and a panel of judges will select the winning team. A panel of celebrity judges will also pick the top funniest films based on student submissions.

The winning stand-up performances and short films from the semi-finals will be posted on Rooftop Comedy’s Web site, where viewers will vote online for their favorites to determine who will move on to the finals. The four highest rated clips from both categories will advance to the finals in Aspen, CO. The finalists will perform and the films will be screened on stage alongside some of the best names in comedy on May 30 and 31. The finals will be broadcast live via Rooftop Comedy and viewers will vote to determine the funniest students in the country.

“By being a part of this contest we are able to compete with schools across the country,” says semi-finalist and MMC student Van Corona. “The Aspen Comedy Festival is our Rosebowl, and I have no doubt in my mind that MMC has the talent to send one student to Aspen.” “Getting an opportunity to prove weather or not you can actually be funny in front of your peers is a somewhat unique experience and I am thrilled that Rooftopcomedy.com gave me such an opportunity,” says MMC student and semi-finalist Sam Rogal. “It’s really irrelevent what happens in the following rounds because I am just glad I got this far and will get the chance to perform with these truly funny people one more time.”

The Nutz and Boltz of Comedy group seeks to entertain the MMC student body by responding to suggestions and input from fellow students and tailoring their unscripted performances to fit the tastes of the audience.
