Cell and Molecular Biology students master the "art" of pipetting.
Biology students master volumetric measurement techniques while creating a unique work of art.
Science students must demonstrate a collection of competencies, including an array of essential laboratory skills. In our Cellular and Molecular Biology course (BIOL 240), a crucial skill is the transfer of small volumes of liquids using a micropipette. To learn this foundational technique, students followed a “pipette by numbers” pattern on a canvas, which allowed them to asses their ability to transfer the correct volume (demonstrating accuracy) repeatedly (demonstrating precision). At the end, each student’s picture formed part of a larger pattern of all the images created by the students in the lab, resulting in a colorful depiction of the double helices in DNA. Stop by the 6th floor later this week to view the students’ work displayed in the hall!
As MMC worked to reopen its Main Campus for the Fall 2020 semester, the Department of Natural Sciences developed a plan to continue performing in-person laboratory courses while also accommodating remote learners. MMC’s science labs underwent extensive safety reinforcement to allow in-person students to participate in labs with their remote partners learning from home.
