MMC Confers More than 400 Degrees at Commencement

(New York, NY) Families and friends cheered as 413 graduates walked across stage to receive their undergraduate degrees from Marymount Manhattan College on May 16, 2008. The 59th Commencement Ceremony was held in Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center.
Platform guests included the Board of Trustees, MMC administrative leaders and faculty members. 
Commencement began with a performance of the National
Graduates and guests arrive at Lincoln Center.
Anthem, sung by Kathleen Monteleone,’05. Sr. Virginia Dorgan, RSHM, Campus Minister, delivered the invocation and Anne C. Flannery, Esq. ’73, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees greeted the 2008 graduates.

Judson R. Shaver, President of Marymount Manhattan addressed the graduates and said, “There is hope for the common good,” referring to his speech at the baccalaureate ceremony, “and guess what, you’re it! Today is a day to celebrate. Congratulations.” 

Dr. Elaine Pagels, Harrington Spear Paine Foundation Professor of Religion at Princeton University, was presented with the Doctor of

Humane Letters, honorus causa for her “scholarship and dedication to elucidating the multifaceted, complex layers and influences of religious thought.”

Teresa Lang ’97, former member of the Board of Trustees and devoted benefactor, was presented with the Doctor of Fine Arts, honorus causa. Upon receiving her degree, Mrs. Lang said, “My husband has almost 50 honorary degrees. This is my first one,” she said to graduates and guests. “I hope you will come back next year so you can see me receive my second one.”

Mary Anne Schwalbe, a former trustee of Marymount Manhattan and a committed advocate for refugee women and children, was presented with the Doctor of Laws, honorus causa. Through the Mary Anne Schwalbe Scholarship Fund, Mrs. Schwalbe supports refugee and international students at MMC. She is the founding director emerita of the Women’s Commission for Refugee Women and Children.

MMC Valedictorian Brian Lee Letchworth ’08 and senior class speaker Aaron Abergel ’08 both addressed their fellow classmates with a reflection of their years at Marymount Manhattan College.
“We must continue to be lifelong learners and thinkers,” Letchworth said. “We need to keep on keepin on. Maybe one day we’ll find ourselves brought back together again.”

A total of 413 Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees were conferred.

Math Department Holds The Eleventh Annual Pi-Day Contest

Every year, the Mathematics department holds a College-wide π-Day contest. Students, faculty, and staff are invited to submit an original sentence, paragraph, poem, or short story that uses the digits of π in order (π ≈ 3.1415926..).
