Passing of Friend and Former Trustee Theresa Lang ’97

(New York, NY) Theresa Lang, an alumna, former trustee and long-time friend of Marymount Manhattan College, passed away June 30, 2008. President Judson R. Shaver remembers Mrs. Lang’s recent participation in the 2008 Commencement ceremony, as she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts: “It was a great pleasure to be with Theresa and Gene and others of her family at our recent Commencement, at which we awarded an honorary doctorate to Mrs. Lang,” Shaver said. “Those who were there will long remember her great charm and wit as she addressed our graduates. Theresa Lang was a very special friend; generations of students, faculty and staff will benefit from her presence among us and from her generous support of Marymount Manhattan College, where her memory will long endure.”

Several prominent facilities and programs at the College bear Mrs. Lang’s name, in appreciation of her advocacy of education, including The Theresa Lang Theatre, the Theresa Lang Center for Producing and the Theresa Lang Scholarship Fund, which supports students who demonstrate academic merit and are involved with community service. After graduating from Marymount Manhattan College as a returning student in 1997, Mrs. Lang remained a member of the MMC community and served on the Board of Trustees for nearly ten years. 

Outside of Marymount Manhattan, Mrs. Lang has contributed to the Eugene M. Lang Foundation, the New York City Opera and the Hunter College Foundation as a trustee. Mrs. Lang has also been a board member at several hospitals throughout New York City, including the New York Hospital Medical Center, the City Hospitals Visiting Committee for the United Hospital Fund of New York. She was a volunteer Red Cross Nurse Aide at Queens General Hospital and a volunteer at Lenox Hill Hospital.

There will be a Wake at the Frank Campbell Funeral Home, located at 1076 Madison Avenue, on July 2 from 6:30 – 9 p.m. A service will be held at St. Jean Baptiste Church, located at 184 East 76th Street, on July 3 at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made either to the: Theresa Lang Scholarship Fund at Marymount Manhattan College or NY Hospital Queens (Theresa & Eugene M. Lang Research Center, 5645 Main St., Flushing, NY 11355, Attn: Stephen S. Mills, President). The College will invite students, faculty, staff and friends to celebrate Theresa Lang at a memorial in the fall.

Math Department Holds The Eleventh Annual Pi-Day Contest

Every year, the Mathematics department holds a College-wide π-Day contest. Students, faculty, and staff are invited to submit an original sentence, paragraph, poem, or short story that uses the digits of π in order (π ≈ 3.1415926..).
