MMC Community Gathers for Veterans’ Reception
At 3:30 pm, Carol Jackson, Ph.D., Vice President for Student Affairs, greeted the room full of staff, students, alum, and friends before welcoming Musical Theatre major, Drew Hope ’23, who sang a beautiful rendition of The Star Spangled Banner.
MMC President Kerry Walk then took to the podium for her opening remarks, soon welcoming the various Veterans and military family members to share their stories and experiences. Michael Emmons, Associate Director of Campus Security, discussed his time in the Marine Corps and shared pictures from his travels overseas to Korea, Thailand, and more. Afterwards, recent graduate Kyle Gilliam ’19 described working aboard aircraft carriers and later his journey from the military to studying ballet. Other veterans and military family members who are currently enrolled at the College introduced themselves to the room, sharing their areas of study and how they made their way to MMC.
“Student Affairs realizes the importance and value of our Veteran students and their dependents,” explains Jackson. “The veterans have rich and diverse experiences to share with fellow students to broaden their perspective of the world. It is important to honor their contributions to the country; after all, this is the “land of the free, because of the brave.”
Many thanks to all who were able to attend, especially those within our community - past and present - who have served in the United States military!
