MMC Hosts 2008 Homecoming and Parents Weekend

Join “MMC in the City” for the 2008 Homecoming and Parents Weekend. This year, Marymount Manhattan is combining Homecoming and Parents Weekend to create a special celebration that brings parents, students and alumni together to access all the city has to offer. The weekend festivities present an opportunity to reconnect with friends and family while experiencing campus life at the College, including academic presentations, divisional open houses, a special alumni reception, an alumni career panel, a student and alumni networking social and a flag football game.

“Homecoming and Parents Weekend will be a very special integration of alumni, parents and students,” Director of Alumni Relations Linda Sada said. “It is a true community-building event.”

The Regina Peruggi Room will serve as the setting for the Alumni Career Panel at 6 p.m. on Friday, October 17. The panel will share insights about and take questions about their careers and lives since graduating from Marymount Manhattan. A networking social organized for students, parents and alumni will follow on the Lowerre Family Terrace. President Judson R. Shaver, Ph.D., will welcome the weekend’s participants at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 18 in the Theresa Lang Theatre. A Saturday alumni reception will also be held on the Lowerre Family Terrace from 12-1 p.m.

MMC’s Theatre Production Workshop group will be performing Major Barbara each night throughout the three-day weekend in the Theresa Lang Theatre. An intellectually engaging comedy with spirited debate about religion, capitalism, class, gender equality, power and warfare, Major Barbara is one of George Bernard Shaw’s most forward-thinking plays. This production will be performed by Theatre Arts students with direction by David Mold, scenic design by Carlos Castillo, costume design by Ray Recht, and voice and text coaching by Barbara Adrian. Performances are scheduled at 8 p.m., October 17-18 and 2 p.m., October 19. General admission is $10. Admission is free for MMC students, alumni, faculty and staff with valid MMC ID card.

Weekend participants can also take part in MMC’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk team. Meet up with MMC in the fight against breast cancer at the College’s 71st Street entrance at 8 a.m. on October 19. The team will then walk over to Central Park to begin the Walk. The route starts at the 72nd Street Bandshell and travels up the east side of Central Park and back down the west side. Participants can regroup at the Community Service Floor of the 55th Street Residence Hall. Following the Walk, participants and members of the MMC community are invited to the College for Sunday Brunch from 1-2 p.m.

Participants who wish to lend a hand to New York public schools and to share their creativity may join MMC’s New York Cares Day Team. Through this city-wide effort on Saturday, October 18, students and weekend participants will have the opportunity to paint murals and classrooms, add bright new line games to playgrounds, organize libraries and plant flowers to help beautify more than 100 public schools throughout the five boroughs. Students and participants can sign up at www.newyorkcaresday.org. Click on “Join a Team,” and choose Marymount Manhattan College from the drop-down menu. Also, this event can even fulfill students’ FYM Community Service requirement.

“Given the urban setting of Marymount Manhattan, our campus truly extends throughout New York City, so it is only natural that our Homecoming Weekend festivities would include events that engage students in the community,” Erin Q. Schwartz, community outreach coordinator, said. “Whether raising funds for breast cancer research or painting and revitalizing a NYC public school, students, faculty, and staff will come together to create real positive change while making friends and fostering a sense of community within MMC.”

This year’s annual Homecoming Flag Football Game is scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 18 on Roosevelt Island. A BBQ, a half-time show, and a host of activities sponsored by MMC clubs and organizations will make this a fun and memorable event. Buses will depart between 1 and 2 p.m. from the 71st Street Campus Entrance and the 55th Street Residence Hall for the Octagon Soccer Field, which is located on the western side of Roosevelt Island, north of the Manhattan Park apartment complex. MMC students who would like to participate on a flag football team can contact the Campus Activities Board (CAB) at cab@mmm.edu.

For those traveling outside of New York City, special group accommodations are available at The Bentley Hotel located at 500 East 62nd Street between York Avenue and FDR Drive from October 16 to October 20.
