Dr. Mindy Fullilove

In Urbanism is a Participatory Sport, Dr. Mindy Fullilove will address the importance of learning about the city by participating in its activities. This is especially true when teachers can offer structure for engagement that models participatory rather than authoritarian involvement. Students who have access to these kinds of experiences are prepared to be leaders of the “resilient” cities we must build to replace the sorted-out cities that are undermining our democracy.

About Mindy Fullilove

Dr. Mindy Fullilove is a board-certified psychiatrist who explores the ties between environment and mental health. She received her bachelor’s degree from Bryn Mawr College and her MS and MD degrees from Columbia University. 

Dedicated to the psychology of place, Dr. Fullilove’s research started in 1986 when she linked the AIDS epidemic with place of residence, and she continues to focus on the health problems caused by inequality. For the past 30 years, Dr. Fullilove has been investigating how broken connections between different sections of cities harm public health, and she explores ways to reconnect them. Previously, Dr. Fullilove taught at Columbia University and was a lecturer at Parsons School of Design. She is currently Professor of Urban Policy and Health at The New School.

She has published numerous articles and six books, including Urban Alchemy: Restoring Joy in America’s Sorted-Out Cities, Root Shock: How Tearing Up City Neighborhoods Hurts America and What We Can Do About It, and House of Joshua: Meditations on Family and Place.

About the Lecture Series

The Lefkowitz Lecture Series was established with the funding raised at MMC’s first benefit dinner, held to honor Attorney General (AG) Louis Lefkowitz, who served as the AG of New York State for 22 years. The lecture series features speakers from the public service sector.
