Griffy’s Grocery Extends Hours After Successful Pilot Program

Marymount Manhattan College’s first student food pantry, Griffy’s Grocery, kicked off in early 2019 and has since served over one hundred students with non-perishable food and care items. The Grocery will officially open for the fall 2019 semester on Tuesday, September 10 with newly extended hours.

Developed by Zakkiyya Taylor, Associate Director of Community Engagement, and Robin E. Nackman, Executive Director of Career Services, The Grocery works to battle food insecurity at MMC. Commonly defined as inconsistent access to balanced, regular, and nutritious meals, food insecurity has proved to be a significant issue among college students today. “Hungry students don’t go to class as much. They don’t study as well. They don’t complete assignments as well. They don’t finish their programs. They don’t graduate,” says Nackman.

Since opening in February 2019, over a hundred MMC students have shopped at the pop-up grocery. Participating students are asked to fill out a one-time intake form, and can stop in each week to pick out a bagful of non-perishable items, such as pasta, soups, and breakfast foods. The Grocery is open on Tuesdays from 10:00–11:00 am and on Fridays from 2:00–3:00 pm.

Every student is welcome to shop – no questions asked, say Nackman and Taylor. “If you ever have to decide between getting food and doing anything else, we want you to be able to get food here.”
