Students Bring Three New Clubs To Marymount Manhattan

(New York, NY) Marymount Manhattan students have initiated three new clubs during the fall 2008 semester: Griffin Soccer, the Cancer Schmancer Club, and the Mock Trial Club. These new clubs are a testament to the variety of scholarly, athletic and community-oriented interests and initiative of MMC students.

Alejandro Fernandez is the president of Griffin Soccer, a club of about 21 male and female members, which provides opportunities for students to participate in an organized soccer league and to attend lectures, fundraisers and other events connected to the sport and other positive causes. The club, which competes as Griffin United, has had a successful first season, with eight wins, one tie, and one loss. On November 9th, Griffin United participated in the final week of play-offs, and won the Newton Co-ed League Championship. The group practiced at Roosevelt Island and played in the Metro Soccer New York 2008 Fall Newton Co-ed League. Griffin Soccer also fosters relationships between participants and with the neighboring community. The club will organize trips to live games and viewings of broadcasted games. The club advocates school spirit, as it is named for the College mascot. Assistant Professor of Accounting Corrine Crawford serves as the club advisor.

The Cancer Schmancer Club promotes awareness about women’s health issues and disseminates information about the importance of women tending to their health and bodies. Gabriella Greco is the president of the club, which advocates diagnosis of women’s cancers in the earliest stage possible, when they are most curable. The club is an extension of the Cancer Schmancer Movement, founded by actress Fran Drescher. The goal of the club at MMC and the movement as a whole is to assemble a wide network of members and supporters, which will maximize their collective impact on cancer prevention, treatment and awareness. Monica Colbert, assistant director of Academic Achievement, serves as the staff advisor to the club. To read more about the Cancer Schmancer Movement, click here

The Mock Trial Club seeks to educate Marymount Manhattan students about the legal system, jurisprudence and the work of attorneys. The club will allow students to get a sense of the legal system from the inside. Through debates and other club activities, members have the opportunity to develop critical thinking and public speaking skills, as well as knowledge of legal practices and procedures. Julietta Lopez is the club president and Political Science Professor Richard Meagher is the advisor. “The strong interest of various Marymount Manhattan students including: pre-law, political science, international studies, acting, and communication majors coupled with my experience in and passion for mock trial motivated me to start the Mock Trial Club,” said Julietta. “The administration at Marymount Manhattan College has been exceptionally supportive and encouraging with the founding of the club. Anne Flannery, Chair of the Board of Trustees and a Marymount Manhattan alumna, played a crucial role in the founding and launch of the Mock Trial Club through her guidance, encouragement, support and sponsorship.” The Mock Trial Team will compete in the American Mock Trial Association’s intercollegiate competition and will prepare a case and act out the role of witnesses and lawyers. “The Club is a perfect fit for our campus, where we have a strong Social Sciences curriculum that prepares students for law school, as well as a nationally-known theater program,” says Rich Meagher.
