Summer “Ethics in Creativity” Students Enter the ‘Shark Tank’

As a final project in summer session course AIP 339: Ethics in Creativity, taught by Nava Silton, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Psychology, students pitched their final capstone “tools” to a panel of ‘sharks,’ inspired by the popular ABC television show Shark Tank.

Applying the ethical, creative, and divergent thinking principles they uncovered throughout the semester, students in Dr. Silton’s class were asked to work in groups to develop the idea for a tool or product to better society in one of these four areas: Education, Business, Media, and Relationships/Psychology.

For each project, students conducted a brief literature review on their proposed content area and were asked to complete empathic and human-centered interviews with community members to assess the diverse needs of their target demographic. As a fun twist to the presentations, each group then had to “pitch” their product to a panel of guest judges, inspired by Shark Tank’s dramatic entertainment format.

Among the three projects was a financial planning app targeted towards young adults called Sterly—a combination of “Start” and “Early”—which was unanimously selected by the sharks for investment.

Bravo to all of the students involved for strong, impressive projects!
