MMC Alumna Leads Mosaic Preparatory Academy to Experience College Life at Marymount Manhattan

(New York, NY) A group of 40 third grade students from Mosaic Preparatory Academy, elementary school located in East Harlem, visited Marymount Manhattan on December 8. Lisette Caesar is the principal of the public school, which opened in September 2008, and an alumna who graduated from Marymount Manhattan in 1995 with a degree in Liberal Arts and a minor in Teacher Education. The visit featured classroom visits, tours of the College, lunch and student performances. Each class of students at Mosaic, which is a college preparatory school, visits a higher education institution each year, to encourage awareness and interest in colleges and universities.

Roger Zeeman, assistant professor and chair of the Teacher Education Program at MMC, coordinated the event with the help of several students enrolled in the Teacher Education program at Marymount Manhattan, including Nathalia Fonseca, Shante King, Jennifer Sobol, Jacqueline Downey, Desiree Gallardo and Elise Myers and departmental assistant Matthew Mazauskas. Student Abraham Blanco coordinated a performance by the MMC Choir.

Students from Mosaic visited a variety of classes at the College, including Professor Barbara Ballard’s American Slavery course, Professor Yu-Yin Cheng’s History of People’s Republic of China course and Professor Millie Falcaro’s Photography course. Faculty members engaged with Mosaic students, who sat beside Marymount Manhattan students to get a sense of a college classroom environment. Mosaic students answered questions about influential American slaves, learned about different dance styles and watched student poster presentations and a documentary about contemporary China. Other classes students visited included Introduction to Poetry with Professor Martha Sledge, Animal Behavior with Professor Peter Cain, Theater Games and Improvisation with Professor Dan Diggles, Writing Seminar with Clare Lowell, and Ceramics with Nicolas Schneidier. The MMC Dance Department Club ran a Dance Class Simulation for Mosaic students as well.

Mosaic, a school that features a dual language program in Spanish and English, seeks to promote “the growth of a campus community.” Students are referred to as scholars and teachers are referred to as professors. Each class at Mosaic adopts a college, researches the institution and decorates their classroom bulletin board with information and decorations with the College logo and colors. Mosaic partners with a selection of museums, historical societies, dance organizations and other institutions, which enable students to learn about arts and culture in New York City. Mosaic Preparatory Academy’s mission as an elementary school is to provide every scholar with the skills and strategies necessary for success in elementary school, middle school, high school and beyond.
