Facebook Connects MMC Alumni

(New York, NY) Originally constructed as a networking tool for students attending colleges and universities, Facebook is the popular, free-accessing networking Web site that has grown to include members based on city, workplace, school and region. Marymount Manhattan’s Office of Alumni Relations, like so many other alumni associations, is finding Facebook to be an advantageous tool to engage young alumni and keep them interconnected with the College and each other.

“Facebook has become such a phenomenon, and I think it is because of the ease it allows you to connect with friends,” Alumni Development Assistant Shelli Luchs said. “In addition to our Web site, we wanted to find a platform for all alumni to use where they would feel more comfortable interacting with us and checking in to learn about the Alumni Association.”

Once users connect with members of the same network, such as Marymount Manhattan College Alumni Association, users can also connect with friends upon acceptance, giving them access to their friends’ profiles. Network users who have not been confirmed as friends are restricted from viewing members’ detailed profile data.

“I think Facebook is going to be a great promotion tool, and already we are seeing the benefits,” Director of Alumni Relations Suzy Mulvihill said. “In a short period of time, we have had 250 people sign up for the group.”

“Each person is in control of how much or how little they want to share with fellow classmates,” Luchs adds. “When alums set up an individual Facebook account they have the option of keeping their pages completely private from anyone they choose.”

Event registration, news updates and submitted notes can appear as social actions on Facebook. A user can even R.S.V.P. for an event or e-mail the site administrator.

Marymount Manhattan College is an urban, independent, liberal arts college. The mission of the College is to educate a socially and economically diverse population by fostering intellectual achievement and personal growth and by providing opportunities for career development.
