Kicking Off Womxn’s Herstory Month

On Tuesday, March 3, 2019, MMC’s Student Activities Advisory Board and the Office of Student Development and Activities co-hosted an opening reception in honor of Womxn’s Herstory Month, inviting New York City Councilwoman Helen Rosenthal to speak.

Councilwoman Rosenthal represents the 6th Council District, which covers NYC’s Upper West Side. She is a leading voice on issues of gender equity and civic engagement, tenants’ rights, accessibility, education equity, and adequate funding for social service providers. As chair of the Committee on Women since the beginning of 2018, she and Speaker Corey Johnson spearheaded the Council’s groundbreaking and far-reaching Stop Sexual Harassment in NYC Act, which was signed into law in May 2018. A dedicated civil servant, she seeks to advance the position of women and girls in society.

Introducing Councilwoman Rosenthal was Brenelle Braganza ’19, a campus leader who serves as the Student Government Association President. In her address to the campus community, Rosenthal spoke about the large pay gap between women and men and between white people and people of color. She urged everyone in the room to use their constitutional right to vote on the local, state, and federal levels. She also encouraged New York City residents to become familiar with who their representatives are in order to hold them accountable. The program concluded with Rosenthal answering questions from students in the audience, in which she addressed city-wide policy and offered advice on gaining experience in public policy.

The College proudly recognizes the contributions of Womxn to the United States during Womxn’s Herstory Month, celebrated each year during the month of March. We use the alternative spelling of womxn to be more inclusive of non-binary gender expressions and international feminism. The events planned during this month are designed to increase the visibility of all womxn both on campus and in our communities.
