Marcia M. Gallo Talks “Radical Roots of Feminism of Color”

Dr. Gallo’s talk focused on a number of trailblazing women activists, scholars, artists, and writers who guided the critical conversations on the intersection of race, gender, sexuality, and class throughout the end of the twentieth century. She discussed the early efforts of lesbian groups, who in the late 1950s and 60s were forced to hide their identities, to expand the language and visibility of their communities and the issues affecting them. She described the formation and work of the Daughters of Bilitis, America’s first lesbian civil and political rights organization, and their impact on publishing through the group’s magazine, The Ladder, and similar publications.
