Faculty Spotlight: Ellen Orenstein, MFA

Co-created by Associate Professor of Theatre Arts Ellen Orenstein, MFA, with six actors and one playwright—all Marymount Manhattan alumni—the four-part dramatic symphony “The Human Variations” premiered on February 10 at Red Roots Gallery in Manhattan.

The piece examines those moments when human beings are physically right next to each other and still deeply alone. “The Human Variations” employs a unique theatrical style (which the group calls “theality”) that juxtaposes expressive movement and hyper-realistic docu-theater techniques to blur the line between naturalism and expressionism, revealing an extraordinary potential for catharsis.
