At its best, dance is an expression of culture, community, and change. For evidence, look no further than Marymount Manhattan’s own (and only) dance team: Infamous Unit. Consisting of nearly 20 dancers from diverse backgrounds, Infamous Unit has proved to be a crowd favorite at the MMC’s Got Talent competition during Homecoming Weekend and at other campus events.

Emani De’Andre Mack ’20 had multiple goals in mind when he founded the dance team during his first year at MMC.

“I created this club to provide my peers with an opportunity to express themselves wholeheartedly, promote diversity in our community, choreograph in a collaborative environment, and build a family amongst the unit,” Mack says.

Mack, a Peer Leader double-majoring in Dance and Digital Journalism, takes pride in the group’s annual {ME}LANIN FEST. In addition to showcasing Infamous Unit, the event includes multiple forms of artistic expression, such as poetry, spoken word, and song.

Inclusion is of great importance to Mack, who says, “I plan on changing my community by being a role model, mentor, and a symbol of strength—to show that anyone can accomplish their dreams no matter their skin color, sexual orientation, or life circumstances.”
