What is one piece of advice you have for the incoming freshman class?

Karla Castro: Try new things! I was so afraid and so close minded about everything coming into MMC. I had only one major in mind and that was going to be my career forever. But you don’t have to decide, you don’t need to have everything absolutely figured out! After I tried other majors, took other classes, went to various different events I found what I loved. I still don’t know what I’m going to be what I grow up, but I know I’m going to be happy.

What are you going to miss most about MMC?

Christel Mitchell: I’m going to miss my HEOP family, the Starbucks and Cafeteria staffs, and my fellow Marymount peers. I have met so many people from different parts of the world who have both different and similar interests to me. I’m going to treasure all of the discussions we had in the HEOP office about social issues that affect us every day. I will treasure the relationships I have built with the staff and being happily greeted by the wonderful security guards. Lastly, I’m going to miss taking the J train to the Q train every morning and getting off at 72nd Street.

What was your favorite course at MMC?

Tatiana Valencia: The Nature of Evil had to be my favorite class at MMC because it hit me at a crucial time in my life when I was beginning to question everything! In this class I was exposed to multiple perspectives on heavy topics such as, The Rwandan Genocide, 9/11, and The Holocaust which truly helped me understand (in great detail) the dimensions of what the human race is capable of. This class confirmed my empathy and drive to help people overcome adversity and psychological disturbances. While learning about emotionally charged topics in history, it was so refreshing to be guided by such a funny, calm and down to earth professor like Bradley Herling, Ph.D.

As a gift to themselves after four years of hard work, all three speakers will be travelling together in Europe following commencement. Enjoy the trip and best of luck in the future!
