John Leguizamo and Debora L. Spar to Receive Honorary Degrees

MMC is pleased to announce John Leguizamo and Debora L. Spar will be awarded Honorary Degrees at the 2018 commencement ceremony.

A multi-faceted performer, John Leguizamo has established a career that defies categorization. Recent films include Ice Age: Collision Course; Infiltrator, opposite Bryan Cranston and Diane Kruger; and The Crash with Anna Sophia Robb, Dianna Agron, and Ed Westwick.  

Leguizamo has garnered numerous awards and accolades throughout his career including an Emmy Award, a Drama Desk Award, as well as nominations for Tony Awards and a Golden Globe. His film credits include Hangin’ with the Homeboys, Carlito’s Way, To Wong Foo: Thanks for Everything Julie Newmar, Romeo + Juliet, The Pest, Spawn, Moulin Rouge!, Doctor Doolittle, Summer of Sam, Empire, Sueño, The Babysitters, The Happening, Miracle at St. Ana, Righteous Kill, The Lincoln Lawyer, and the Ice Age franchise. 

Leguizamo recently wrapped an extended Broadway run of Latin History for Morons, his newest one-man show, delivering his take on 500 years of Latin History spanning the Aztec and Incan Empires to World War II. Currently, he can be seen in the third and final season of Bloodline on Netflix. Leguizamo resides in New York City with his wife and two children. 

Debora L. Spar most recently held the title of President at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. She was the first woman to have held the esteemed position. 

Spar’s unique range of expertise in business, the arts, thought leadership, and fundraising were finely honed during her tenure as President of Barnard College. Inaugurated in 2008, Spar is widely recognized for stimulating substantial academic and financial growth and establishing a renewed commitment to the arts. 

Prior to her time at Barnard, Spar was a professor at Harvard Business School for 17 years and served as Senior Associate Dean for Faculty Research and Development. Spar received her bachelor’s degree from Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service and her master’s and Ph.D. in Government from Harvard University. She is married to architect Miltos Catomeris and they are the parents of three children.

Math Department Holds The Eleventh Annual Pi-Day Contest

Every year, the Mathematics department holds a College-wide π-Day contest. Students, faculty, and staff are invited to submit an original sentence, paragraph, poem, or short story that uses the digits of π in order (π ≈ 3.1415926..).
