Marymount Manhattan College Celebrates The Writing Center’s Legacy

New York, N.Y. – Editors, writers and leaders of the publishing world gathered June 1-3, 2010, at Marymount Manhattan College (MMC) to share techniques and perspectives during the 2010 Writers’ Conference hosted by The Writing Center. The conference included intensive seminars led by some of the industry’s top literary experts including Bruce Jay Friedman, Denise Shannon and David Patrick Columbia.

The Writing Center, which has been hosted by MMC since February 1994, has encouraged the craft of creative writing through instruction, lectures, symposia and other programs. The Center has been a resource for the metropolitan community fostering intellectual engagement through the Best Selling Authors Series; monthly workshops celebrating various aspects of the writing business and craft, and clinics designed to assist established and aspiring writers with works-in-progress.

Through its events, The Writing Center has cultivated many notable authors, including Linda Fairstein, David Baldacci, Kerry Kennedy, Susan Isaacs, Richard North Patterson, and Colin Harrison. During its 2009 gala, the Center honored writer Bruce Jay Friedman and benefactor Ethel LeFrak.

Marymount Manhattan College recently announced the discontinuation of The Writing Center. The announcement followed a review and evaluation of the College’s initiatives and resources to serve its growing undergraduate population.

In an announcement to the College community, President Judson R. Shaver, Ph.D., said, “The Writing Center has been a valued asset of the College for many years, and has provided valuable service to the wider community. Marymount Manhattan is grateful to Lewis Frumkes, Robert Sherrill and Karen Arfi for their dedication to these programs.”

Marymount Manhattan College is an urban, independent, liberal arts college. The mission of the College is to educate a socially and economically diverse student body by fostering intellectual achievement and personal growth and by providing opportunities for career development.
